Billy Graham was once asked if he ever missed a day reading his Bible. The Evangelist famous for holding his book up by the spine put it like this, “for me the Bible is my spiritual food, and I rarely miss a meal.”
The prophet Isaiah said in Isaiah 26:9, “My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you.” Where Billy Graham equated reading the Bible to being filled up with food, the prophet took one step further. To encounter God is what he desired at all times of the day - morning and night.
Like the Psalmist, he had tasted and seen that the Lord is good. And what Isaiah is talking about here is less to do with an action he can do and more a posture that he’s taking as he waits for God to act. A sign of a mature Christian is someone who is so confident in God’s character that even in the most trying of circumstances they’re content to stay put, knowing who they’re trusting in. This doesn’t mean it isn’t difficult, they long for God to come through, but they know that He will.
