A Closer Look

We have made it, we are past Christmas, and attention has turned to the new year. Oftentime we focus a lot on how we can be better versions of ourselves in the year ahead, but I wonder if this idea could use some fine-tuning.

Hebrews 2:14-15 reads, “Since the children have flesh and blood, he too [Jesus] shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”

You can put habits in place that increase your productivity at work, and you can exercise more often to lose weight. And, no doubt these decisions will give you greater freedom in your time, and your well-being, but they won’t give you soul freedom. Only Jesus gives you this, and by going to the cross, he’s done it. Your fear of death is gone, the Devil can no longer condemn us, we’re indestructible- completely free –and nothing can rob you of that.

As you look for greater freedom in 2021, remember that Jesus has already granted you this. You just have to keep asking yourself, is this the reality that I’m living out of?
