The book of James is known for its punchy and practical instructions of the Christian life. For example, we’re not just to be listeners of the Word, but doers. James 1:25 flushes out how, he says as “the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does.
By ‘perfect law,’ James isn’t just referring to the Mosaic Law, but the whole Bible, he’s simply picking up on the same language and the example that Jesus used. James is reinforcing that we’re to be shaped by it, and primarily how this happens is when we look intently into the ‘perfect law’.
We’re not distracted, our attention isn’t split, but we’re focused.. This ‘intently’ is the same Greek word that’s used to describe Peter looking ‘intently’ into the tomb. Keep that picture in your mind, and apply it as you meditate on the very Word that points to Jesus and give you freedom.
