A Closer Look

Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:9 “for God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Another word for ‘appoint’ is nominate. I’m always amazed at the  number of boards people sit on- at church, at school. Often protocol is for someone within the organization to nominate you, to put your name forward for the duty.

So let’s rephrase this verse, 'God nominated you to receive salvation through Jesus.' He saw you fit as a good candidate. To be nominated for a board is based on your character - consistent involvement or knowledge. But do you know what the basis for our nomination here is? It’s based on God’s love for you! Oh, what a promise. As it says in Ezekiel, God takes no desire in the death of the wicked. It says in 2 Peter that he wants no one to perish but all to come to eternal life. And in John that he sent Jesus not to condemn the world but to save the world through him.

God didn’t appoint us to suffer wrath, that’s not what we were nominated for, but to receive salvation to be saved through Jesus. Just like for a board, now you have to show up.
