A Closer Look

The Prophet Isaiah says in past tense in Isaiah 53:5 that the suffering servant was “pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Spoiler alert: this is Jesus. It’s why he went to the cross and the result of what would happen because of it.

The better we understand why, the more appreciative we’ll be. God speaks through Isaiah that he was pierced for our transgressions. That word transgression means to cross the line. For every time you’ve gone too far with a joke, put your foot in your mouth, or lashed out at your loved one, Jesus was pierced to pay the penalty for that. He was also crushed for our iniquities. This word literally means immoral behaviour. For all of the twisted and warped thoughts you’ve had - ones that others may not have seen but God has, Jesus went to the cross to pay for it.

And it gets better, the punishment Jesus endured brought us peace, by his perfect sacrifice, we have been healed. We are so broken that we need God and so loved that He sent Jesus to die for us.
