A Closer Look

Who Jesus is has boggled the greatest of minds. He’s fully God and fully man. Prior to Jesus the Son going to the cross, he had a famous encounter with God the Father in the garden of Gethsemane.

Today we might call what transpired as a heart-to-heart. Jesus knew that his time on earth was coming to an end, but the gravity of what his death would entail was difficult for him to grapple with. In Matthew 26:39 he says “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Here we see a glimpse into Jesus as man.

He doesn’t want to have to bear the wrath of mankind if he doesn’t have to, but he will submit to his Father no matter what. Then after an interruption with his close friends, Jesus prays a second time, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” Here we see Jesus as God, he accepts what his future death will hold and is able to bear it as perfect God. Jesus is God and man, he is to be worshiped as the almighty and he’s to be your best friend.
