There are preferred Bible verses when sharing the gospel, and one of them has to be Romans 6:23, which says, “for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
If you think about what a wage is, it’s something you earn, typically for working. What Paul is saying is that what we deserve for our sins, for displeasing God is death. That’s the pension plan that we’re in line for. And then Paul says, “but the gift of God is eternal life.”
Wages are something you earn, a gift is something you don’t earn - you’re given it freely. And this is what we get in Jesus - if we trust in him to forgive us of our sins, we spend eternity with God. That’s a gift - there are no strings attached. As people who are broken and by default will hurt God, our trajectory is life apart from him.
In other words, death, but He wants all people to turn to him, he takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, and that’s why he’s offered you this gift. Two questions then, have you received it and are you sharing it with others?
