Happy Palm Sunday! It is a milestone day on the Christian calendar.

It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve read this story, it’s difficult to fully grasp just how much humility our Lord demonstrated in his triumphal entry. Here Jesus was coming to Jerusalem to take his rightful crown like so many of his Israelite predecessors, and yet what does he instruct to his disciples?

As is recorded in Matthew 21, "See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey." A donkey! Horses were what signified power and victory, and yet Jesus comes to the people on a second-class animal. And more specifically he saddles up the colt. Without its mother walking alongside, the foal would likely have a tough time even going in a straight line.

Jesus chose the low of the low. In his time on earth he didn’t come to be served, but to serve. As you consider how our King took his crown this week, remember that he doesn’t just want you to follow his example of service.

He wants you to encounter him in your heart; he wants to first serve you so that you can then effectively serve others.
