God’s love is often described as unconditional. But it’s important to clarify, what this means is there is nothing you can do to make Him love you more or less: nothing.

He loves us not because of what we are, but because of who He is. The book of 1 John says that "God is love."

Now that’s in the fourth chapter, if we skim back to chapter 1 verse 7, the writer actually makes a conditional statement about us and God. He says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

If we walk in the light…this is where our culture calls God oppressive and intolerant. But this right here is actually where gospel is activated. God is just, His son Jesus died and resurrected. In doing that, he makes it possible for everything to be true about him to be true about you.

However, if you’re not to embrace this, if you’re not to live a life that embodies loving God and loving people – why should you experience God’s presence in your relationships, why should you have your sins forgiven? Your responsibility is to respond to God’s ability.
