A Closer Look

There may be no Jesus' miracle that would have been more exciting to see than him raising Lazarus from the dead. The guy had been in the tomb for four days, then, Jesus comes, they take away the stone, he prays and Lazarus walks out. I would have been speechless, I don't know about you.

But when Jesus first arrived on the scene he comforts Lazarus' sisters that their brother will rise again. And he makes this powerful assertion about himself when he does that. He says in John 11:25 "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live; even though they die."

The reality is as grand as this miracle was Lazarus would still one day die, we'll all eventually die. But what Jesus says is that even though that's inevitable, "I am the resurrection." In other words, he's saying what's about to happen to Lazarus will enable him to live again on this earth, but with my resurrection I'll overcome death. I'll go back to my place in heaven and because of that I'll make it possible for you to one day join me and resurrect too.

You see, our faith is not in a miracle with brief impact on this earth. Our faith is in the person of Jesus who through his resurrection provides a way for you and me to live with God forever.
